  1. I want to study languages and literatures at your department. What courses do you offer?
    We offer courses in many different languages, please see the list of courses available for Erasmus students by clicking on course selection.
     
  2. Which courses are offered in English?
    Only courses in English are taught in English.
     
  3. How and when do I apply?
    We advise all our Erasmus and bilateral applicants to use the general application site for the University of Gothenburg. No paper applications will be received from the spring 2012. Datelines are: 15th of October for spring semester and 15th of April for autumn semester.
     
  4. Study advisors – when and how can I get in touch?
    If you have questions about course selection you can contact the Study Advisors for the language you are planning to study. See phone and visiting hours and where you find us.
     
  5. Who is my Erasmus coordinator?
    We have two Erasmus coordinators at the department:
    Hilde Vandeput is the Erasmus coordinator for the following contracts: Germany, France and Russia.
    Johanna Palomino is the Erasmus coordinator for the following contracts: Spain, England, Ireland, Portugal and Italy.
     
  6. Can I apply for any courses at the department of Languages and Literatures?
    You can apply for courses that match your field of study. On the course selection list you will find all courses available for you requirements. Please note that some of our courses specially at the introductory level require a knowledge of Swedish.
     
  7. How can I find out more about my choices?
    Unfortunately course descriptions are currently in Swedish. However, you can access this site www.gul.gu.se and check out the reading lists. That will give you an idea of the contents of the course.
     
  8. When does the semester start, what are the dates for the next academic year?
    The autumn semester starts 1st of September and ends the 18th of January 2012. The spring semester starts the 19th of January and ends the 7th of June.
     
  9. Can I use the library at the University of Gothenburg?
    Yes, you can use the library. You just need to get your GU card, you do this as soon as you are registered on your courses. Go to any of the service centers at GU.
     
  10. Can I attend lectures without being registered?
    No, unfortunately you cannot attend if you are not registered at the course.
     
  11. When will I know if I’ve been nominated as an Erasmus student?
    You will get information via e-mail in the middle of November for the Autumn semester and late May for the spring semester.
     
  12. How many hours does 30 HECS/full time studies represent- What is the equivalent in ECTS?
    30 hec represent full time studies in Sweden (about 24 ECTS) For full time studies a student is expected at least 40 hours a week. Out of those 40 hours around 15 hours a week are teaching hours.
     
  13. What happens after I’ve been nominated ?
    You will get a letter of acceptance for the courses you’ll be studying with us. Please make sure to read all the instructions and be here in good time for the general introduction. Dates will be specified on the acceptance letter.
     
  14. What kind of documentation is needed for my application?
    You need to send copies of your transcript records and something that shows us the level of your language proficiency.
     
  15. What’s Erasmus?
    Erasmus is a European Exchange program that allows students to study at a variety of universities within Europe. Check here which agreements are set at the moment for our department, application datelines and requirements: Erasmus information.
     
  16. I’ve been accepted as an Erasmus student for next semester – when will I get more information?
    You will get more information in the beginning of August. If you have questions about your choice of courses contact the study advisor for your subject or your coordinator at your home university.
     
  17. I’ve completed my studies at the Department of Languages and Literatures and need documentation to bring home to my University – how do I get that and what sort of documentation do I need?
    You’ll need to bring a Transcript of Records with you, please go to any of our student offices and get one. Don't forget to get your learning agreement singed by your Erasmus coordinator.
     
  18. Do I get help with my living arrangements or other support services ?

  19. What is GUL?
    GUL is the learning platform the University of Gothenburg use. There you will find information about your course, you will find schedule, reading list and once you’re registered to the course you will get login and password to the secured pages where only accepted students and their teacher have access. There you communicate with your teacher and can download articles, get extra information etc
     
  20. Where can I find the schedule for my course?
    You find the schedule on GUL under the course you’ve applied for.
     
  21. Where can I find the reading list for my course?
    You find the reading list on GUL under the course you’ve applied for.
     
  22. Is attendance compolsury?
    Attendance is not compulsory, but it is wise to take the time with lecturers and benefit as much as possible from their knowledge. However, if the circumstances do not allow you to join your courses within three weeks of the beginning of term, you may wish to reconsider and come back to us (and reapply) next term.
     
  23. What is regarded as cheating?
    Read more on the University rules on cheating.
     
  24. What about exams?
    Please refer to the list of exams on the relevant course page on GUL or access the exam registration site via the student portal and “Ladok på webb”
    NB: It may not the possible to sign up for an August retake exam.
    However, this does not mean that you will not be allowed to sit the exam, simply that we cannot guarantee that there will be a seat available in the examination hall. Go to the examination venue on the day of the exam at the time specified in the examination list and talk to the proctors/invigilators there. Don't forget to bring a valid student ID.

    You can get a student certificate at the student office.
     
  30. I can’t see my grades on Ladok. Who do I contact?
    If you can’t see your results published on Ladok, contact the student office. Remember that teachers have up to 3 weeks to correct and report your grades.You contact the office of degrees.
